Five Minute Friday ~ Afraid…

Five Minute Friday ~ Afraid…

Five Minute Friday, Afraid, Lisa Jo Baker, Mark, Pinterest

“Don’t be afraid… I am here!” ~ Mark 6:50

Here’s what we do on Fridays:

  • After receiving Lisa-Jo’s prompt, we write for 5 minutes flat ~ no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
  • Then, we link back here, inviting others to join in.
  • Finally, and there are absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community.

Go

As a child, I was afraid of the dark, always wondering what lurked in the black space before me.

“Please leave the bathroom light on, mommy!”, I would cry, believing the light would erase the fear.

Light did dispel fear, bringing comfort to my anxious heart.  No longer did I assume the worst or expect the tragic.  The light allowed me to see, really see instead of speculate and wonder.

Fear, being afraid of the dark, carried well into adulthood.  The darkness took a different form, a sculpted form.

This dark character, this evil one, made darkness a field trip into my soul.

No longer was I afraid of the blackness of night, I was afraid because of the blackness of my heart.

He enjoyed toying with me, exacerbating fears, causing me to be afraid.

He found pleasure in seeing me struggle, pupils dilated, arms waving in front of me as I tried to navigate the darkness on my own.

Finally, FINALLY, I called out.

I didn’t call for my mom, I called for a Savior.

The LIGHT banished darkness.

With words of comfort, He spoke into my spirit, “Don’t be afraid… I am here!”

STOP

I read and re-read this one. I love this line, “No longer was I afraid of the blackness of night, I was afraid because of the blackness of my heart.” Wow! And this truth, “The Light banished darkness.” Yes and amen!

When I arrived on your page your smiling face made me smile and I remembered again how much I adore you! <3 Will you be at Allume?

  • Blessings For Mom

Happy FMF! Really enjoyed this as usual. It’s funny how darkness as a child can cause such fears. I remember a time during my childhood where I got afraid to go to sleep at night, in case I didn’t wake up for some reason. It was a fear of death or dying I guess (have no idea where it came from). The last 2 lines of what you wrote I especially loved. Hugs, Rebekah

Some fears a mom just can’t banish.

When I was young, it was my job to feed our kenneled dog a can of dogfood. We used to open open ends and then push the food out. If I didn’t make it out to feed her until dark, I was so afraid, I’d just wing that food over the top of the kennel and run. Poor dog.

YES! He’s here. I need to check in with Him often to be sure, but girl–He always is…Here.

and I’m learning to embrace the dark…for it’s then we can see His light clearly. if only we stop closing our eyes in fear…

{HUGS} LOVED your take on the prompt, friend!
