Forgiveness: Quotes, Thoughts & Inspiration From People Like Us…

Forgiveness.

At some point, we’ll be called upon to forgive.

Some of us are called to forgive what seems unforgivable.

Others of us are asked to offer forgiveness for lesser offenses.

Either way, the choice to forgive, to extend the hand and heart of forgiveness, is ours.

Naturally, no way.

Supernaturally, the only way.

Here are some of my favorite quotes on forgiveness,

a topic in which I’m diving deeper…

“To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.” ~ C.S. Lewis

“Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude.”  ~ Martin Luther King, Jr

“Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.” ~ Corrie Ten Boom

“Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.” ~ Ann Lamott

“Forgiveness must be immediate, whether or not a person asks for it. Trust must be rebuilt over time. Trust requires a track record.” ~ Rick Warren

“Dear Lord, please show me everything I need to understand about forgiveness and surrender.” ~ Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

“There is hope in forgiveness.” ~ John Piper

“You cannot forgive just once, forgiveness is a daily practice.” ~ Sonia Rumzi

“What you can’t forget… God can’t remember!” ~ John MacArthur, Jr.

“Unforgiveness denies the victim the possibility of parole and leaves them stuck in the prison of what was, incarcerating them in their trauma and relinquishing the chance to escape beyond the pain.” ~ T.D. Jakes

I loved your quote about unforgiveness being like a poison. It truly is. It will continue to eat away at you until you let it go. Sometimes, (I should say most times), the only way to let it go is by giving it over to God and letting Him do it. It’s especially helpful when we let go of our pride in the process. :) Thank you for these wonderful words of encouragement.

    Blessings~
    Shari

Isn’t that a great quote, Shari?  It’s absolutely true, too.

You’re so right! “The only way to let it go is by giving it over to God and letting Him do it.”  So grateful his capable and willing.

Thank you for sharing.  Have a blessed Thursday…

After reading your post, I was curious to see what was out there in Pinterest-land concerning “forgiveness” and I found some goodies!  In my short 24 years of life, my family and I (and now my husband and I) have run into some very damaging relationships where forgiveness was required.  Even now, we’re still working through pieces of that in certain areas…but God has done so much in our hearts that “forgiving” is coming a bit easier these days…even when the hurt is still raw.

Raw… That’s a great way to describe the pain, the hurt.  So grateful forgiveness has become easier even in the midst of the raw.

I can’t wait to check out these Pinterest links.  Thank you, Alle!!

p.s.  Are you coming to Allume??

We always need reminders to live in an attitude of forgiveness. It’s can be such a difficult part of our lives, but so very, very important. Thanks for sharing these. Gail (BibleLoveNotes.com)

I don’t have a quote off the top of my head, but I use the work Everett Worthington has done on forgiveness in Counseling.

    • StefanieYoungBrown

You’ve given me ANOTHER book to read.  (My stack is nearly as tall as I am.)

      Thank you, Mary Beth!

It’s good and worth it!! Lots of practical exercises! His books could be use as a handbook to if you don’t have time to sit and read the whole thing.

        • StefanieYoungBrown

Perfect! With all the counseling my husband and I do, I’d say it’d be a great resource.

  • Pamela Kuhn

Some of these quotes are going in my journal.  I’ve needed forgiveness and I’ve been blessed to offer it.  A beautiful blessing of grace.

    • StefanieYoungBrown

I love what you said: “I’ve needed forgiveness and I’ve been blessed to offer it.”  So grateful!!

      Thank you for sharing, Pamela.

I love the verse that says that when God forgives, he sets our sin as far as the east is from the west.

    • StefanieYoungBrown

Oh, me, too, Joy!! What a great visual truth on which to cling!

love your passion for forgiveness … it mirrors my own! i’m working on a 31 days series … forgiveness! i believe it’s something so desperately needed in our world today ….

    • StefanieYoungBrown

      Thank you, Tracie!
I agree, it IS desperately needed today. So many live in the sewer of bitterness, holding onto unforgiveness which eats them alive.
I appreciate your passion for forgiveness, too.
      Have a lovely Friday evening…
