The Dig…

For as long as I can remember, our son has wanted to be an Explorer or an Archeologist.  The idea of search and discovery thrills him.

For Christmas this year, dear friends found and gave him the most brilliant gift (pictured above). It’s a block of sand containing small plastic dinosaur bones.  Specialized tools accompanied the kit which helps the “digger” to gently and carefully find each bone.  Once all the bones have been discovered and recovered, they can be assembled into a dinosaur.  Again, brilliant!  What a perfect gift for our son.

As he carefully began chipping away at the block of sand, clear images scrolled through my mind.  There are times in our lives when digging is necessary.  The dig I’m speaking of doesn’t reveal dinosaur bones, precious jewels or ancient writings.  The dig of which I speak chips away at emotional shells, protective masks and false images we’ve created for one reason or another..  What’s underneath ~ who we really are ~ is waiting to be unearthed, revealed, accepted, cared for, nurtured.

The dig is risky.

The dig takes time.

The dig can be tedious.

The dig can be painful.

Either way, the dig is necessary.

Thursday link ups have become my “Dig Day” and will continue to be on into 2012.

Life: Unmasked

In addition, beginning January 1, 2012, I will be joining my sweet friends Rachel Martin from Finding Joy and Ashley Pichea from 3in30Challenge for…

I'm Joining the 31DBBS Challenge

Another challenge I’m thrilled to re-join is…

The HelloMornings winter session begins January 15, 2012, running through April 15, 2012.  Once again, we’re going to dig deep, establishing, re-establishing or continuing a morning routine that begins with him and is intentional.  Here is how Kat from Maximize Your Mornings describes the HelloMornings challenge:

The Challenge is a tri-annual online community event that gathers together thousands of women from all over the world. We encourage one another and keep one another accountable as we work to develop the life giving morning habit of waking up early, spending time with God and being intentional about planning our days and exercising regularly.

Wonderful link ups and challenges to contemplate!  Consider yourself invited…

Happy New Year…

Oh, wow!  Stefanie, this is so good.  I was blessed to visit one of the biggest “digs” in Israel as part of a video production I worked on with my Dad a few years ago – it’s such a meticulous process.  Hours spent in the heat, in the dirt…carefully moving aside chunks of history to get to the precious artifact.  These important projects and challenges you outline do just that for our hearts…that is why I love them so much.  Thank you for sharing!

Amazing experience, Alle!!!  I’m praying our self-discovery is as fascinating as what you experienced.

Aww, I love this post because I was an archaeology major my first two years of college in Puerto Rico.  I loved every minute of it, so I understand your son.  And I love how you have weaved this with the process of digging deep within ourselves.  It is a painful and slow process, but sooooo necessary.  Be blessed my friend.

That is a cool gift… and the dig…. Yep, the dig. Someone once told me my soul was like a septic tank and the Lord was digging out all the gunk. I thought scooping a better word but no, digging is right. Some gunk just sticks…. so gross! Ha!

Hahaha…  I love the septic tank idea (especially since I grew up with one in my back yard).  How, true… Dig, scoop… Dig, scoop..  So thankful HE’s willing:))
