My Story

Sharing “about me” is actually challenge for me.  Not because there isn’t a story to tell, but because I am usually more comfortable talking about YOU than myself; however, in order for you to know me, it is necessary for me to take the time to share about the person behind the writing.

Although I currently reside in Plano, TX, located near Dallas, I will always bleed Kentucky BLUE! I was born at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in February of 1970 and raised in a small town just south called Stanford.  The circumstance through which I was conceived and birthed is less than glamorous, but I’ve found God thrills in taking what is “less than glamorous” and molding it into something fit for His use.

As way of introduction, I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend, a nurse, an aunt, a cousin, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, a traveler, a reader, a student of human behavior, a teacher, a musician, a caregiver and a writer. To further introduce myself, I am going to draw from my past ~ deep into my past ~ HIGH SCHOOL!  One of my favorite musicals of all time, one we did at my high school, is THE SOUND OF MUSIC.   Through a particular song, My Favorite Things, Julie Andrew’s character, Maria, shares with the children all her “favorite” things.  Taking from her idea, I am going to share my favorite things to give you a picture of who I am.

My FAVORITE sports team is the University of Kentucky Wildcat Men’s Basketball team.  I guess you would consider me a FANatical fan, one who has followed their play since childhood.  GO BIG BLUE is a commonly heard chant around our home, especially during MARCH MADNESS.

My FAVORITE Biblical account has to be that of Hosea and Gomer.  This gem of a book, nestled in the latter part of the Old Testament, has God’s mercy and grace woven throughout.  Although the story was written with Hosea representing God the Father with Gomer as the ever wandering Israelites, it is through Christ’s sacrifice that the same grace and mercy demonstrated in the account was extended to us ~ the Gentiles.

My FAVORITE scripture has to be Ephesians 1:13 “And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.”  As an adopted child, although I was adopted by family members, there is always the looming question in the back of  my mind “Who do I resemble?”  I don’t necessarily mean in looks, but in all aspects ~ my likes and dislikes, my temperment and disposition. When I accepted Christ at age 24 my identity in Him became clear ~ I was His, made in His image and likeness.

My FAVORITE person from scripture, other than Jesus, must be, Hannah.  Two weeks before marrying Dan, my OB/GYN identified a problem during a routine visit.  We married knowing I would be facing surgery shortly after returning from our honeymoon.

Since becoming parents was atop our list (we married slightly later in life), we were anxious for me to have the surgery to see what we were up against.  Unfortunately, the news was a bit discouraging.  My OG/GYN, after doing all she could do, gave us the report we did not want to hear.  She guesstimated we had, at best, a 50/50 chance of being able to conceive naturally.  With that in mind, she referred us to an infertility specialist in a neighboring city.

Believe it or not, his prognosis was less encouraging than before.  He plainly said “You have a better chance of winning the lottery than becoming pregnant naturally”; however, he felt as though he might be able to increase y chances through another surgery.  Fine.  If that is what we need to do, then fine.

The surgery was planned for the latter part of 2002.  During that time I dove into the book of 1 Samuel, gleaning what I could from Hannah, a woman to which I could totally relate.  I drew strength, courage and boldness from her.  A week or so prior to Thanksgiving, I thought I might be expecting. “ Impossible”, I thought, “two physicians told me that conceiving naturally was near to impossible.”  Two words flashed like lights in the sky ~ BUT GOD…

God remembered both Hannah and me.  We both delivered healthy sons whom we dedicated right back to Him.  Hannah ~ my example.

My FAVORITE song has to be, and this is a tough one, My Passion by Travis Cottrell.  Travis, in just a few words, sums up exactly what I feel.  Here’s a sample:

You alone are my passion forever.
Song of my soul,
Desire of my heart.
You alone are my passion, my treasure.
I love you for all that You are.

To the ends of the earth I will follow.
There’s nothing that I will not do.
You alone are my reason for living.
Jesus my passion is You.
Jesus my passion is You.

My Life.
My Love.
My God.

Check it out under the “My Playlist” category.

My FAVORITE novel is REDEEMING LOVE by Francine Rivers.  This book, set in the 1850’s, brings to life my favorite biblical account ~ Hosea and Gomer.  I have to admit this was the first novel I ever read, by my own choosing, that is. Honestly, once I began reading it, I struggled putting it down.  It captured me so to lay it on the bedside table meant a momentary disconnect from the characters I grew to love.  I highly recommend this read if you have already had the opportunity to do so.

A beautifully designed website and a gorgeous person to boot. Like the above post, I came to read about thankful Thursday and found myself here reading all about you. I am thankful that you have opened yourself to the world so that others, like me, can grow from your experiences. It’s hard to live each day walking in the path God has set out for us. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Every little encouragement helps.

      Leah,
Welcome and thank you! I am humbled by your kind words and so appreciate the fact you took the time to stop by to visit and comment.
      Please come back again.

  • http://www.heartchoices.com Debbie

I loved reading all about you! We have some things in common. I worked as a nurse for 25 years before ‘retiring’. Later I needed to return to work but since it had been more than five years since I worked as a nurse, I would have to take the RN refresher course. So in the meantime, I got a job at a private school teaching three and four year olds. Since I had dealt with infertility for many of my earlier years and my husband and I were never able to conceive this was a gift from God. I love working with the little children. They are such a blessing to me in the midst of a challenging season of my life.

I too love Jesus. I also love Thanksgiving, flip flops and Burn Notice. :)

It is so nice to meet you.

    Blessings,
    Debbie

    • Stefanie

Oh, Debbie… I am so thankful we connected. As I read your comment, I couldn’t believe how common our lives actually were. Isn’t that like our Heavenly Father? He’s a Master at connecting like-minded people. This is truly a joy!
I’ll look forward to getting to know you better as we press forward.
      Have a blessed day!

Yes- I too have some of those same feelings about being adopted. Just several months ago, I realizied that we’re just like Moses~~born to one mother–raised by another–for God’s purpose and plan. AMEN! An extra hand in our early life.

What a great introduction to you!

However, I must know more about the “musician” title!

I am the band director for my small community, and I also lead worship at our fledgling church. I love to sing and play anything… but my favorites are flute, trombone, guitar and piano. (Trombone was my major.)

    So… more info please?? <3

      Thank you, Meredith!
As far as being a “musician”, I play the piano and sing. I’m totally impressed by your giftedness. Flute, trombone, guitar, piano.. That’s amazing!
I appreciate you sharing and asking…:))

  • Christina Engleman

This is my first visit to your blog so I am just reading about you and I had to share as I can relate to your journey to motherhood as we also faced a similar path but at a very young age! I married my husband of almost 8yrs at the age of 22, shortly after we were engaged at the age of 20 I was diagnosed with a condition that would enable me to have children! I faced 2 surgeries for this condition & I was told I would never concieve naturally only thru IVF, so off to the fertility doctor we went. We left there knowing that we did not want to have a child that way, so we left it to God. It was 4 months late that I became pregnant (naturally) with our now 5yr old son. A year after my son was born I ended up having to have a total hysterectomy so my dream of 4-6 kids will have to happen some other way. I have always been strong in my faith, but that journey really cemented my love for our Lord and the reassurance that he is always with us and will see us through any and all challenges we may face! We are raising our son to love the Lord and to be grateful for all the challenges and blessings in our lives! Praise God Always! God Bless you for being such an inspiration to all of us and for sharing yourself with us!

First of all, I apologize for the REALLY LATE response.  I must have overlooked your comment and terribly sorry.

Wow!  I can’t believe how our stories parallel.  I, too, would have loves to have a quiver full of little Browns running around.  I had to depend upon HIM to give me peace and contentment with the one he blessed me with.  Honestly, I am now very content, something I thought I would never be.  Each time I look at my son, I’m reminded of the miraculous blessing of our Heavenly Father.  He didn’t have to bless us, Christina, and allow us to conceive naturally, but he did.  I am forever grateful!

Thank you for sharing your story.  It reminds me how amazing our GOD is…

  • Manju Sara Jacob

As I read on and came by your favorite Bible account of Hosea and Gomer, the first thing that came in my mind was,” Did she read Redeeming Love? She must have.. And I spent a few minutes going back to scenes that I loved in the book and sat there just thinking about what that book meant to me… 20 minutes later I continued to read your intro and there it was your favorite book: REDEEMING LOVE. This book has to be my favorite book. Thank you for your ROAR write up in todays Five Minute Friday… I will def put in a comment there. God Bless

    • Anonymous

Redeeming Love…  This was the FIRST “christian” novel I ever read.  I’ve always been a self-help, how can I make my life better reader.  Redeeming Love changed that!  As I read the book, I couldn’t put it down.  I kept seeing our Father’s grace over and over and over just as in the story of Hosea and Gomer.  Each account reminds me of his long-suffering love for us and the length to which he wen to demonstrate that love.

Thank you for your kind words and your visit.  I’ll look forward to getting better acquainted.

Wow, what an amazingly touching story! I was about 22 or 23 when I accepted Jesus and I have to say, He used my husband to guide me back to Him. I grew up Lutheran and had all but given up on God when I met the man who would be my husband. He was a strong Christian (non-denominational…something I’m still getting used to…they’re so much more PASSIONATE than Lutherans, it’s amazing!) and the first night we went out, while sitting in his living room talking in the dark (we talked for almost 3 hours about absolutely everything!), he asked me if I believed in God. My answer was that yes, I believed…but. After that, as we got to know each other more, we did Bible studies together. The more I engrossed myself in His Word, the more I wanted to be with Him! It was such an amazing feeling. And now, to have someone that I can share my faith with completely…so wonderful! Anyway, enough about me…your story is touching and I love reading your posts! Always so inspirational :) May God continue to bless you!

  • Cheryl Smith

Hi, Stefanie! I so enjoyed getting to know you today! We, too, struggled for 12 1/2 long years with infertility issues, and Hannah became so near and dear to my heart! God defied the medical wisdom of four doctors and blessed us with a precious son, also, who brings great love and joy to our lives and home every, single day. I tell him often of the barren women in the Bible who were blessed with sons and how every one of them had a Divine call of God on his life…Samuel, John the Baptist, Joseph, and all of the others. God is SO good! I am so glad to have found your blog. I’d love for you to stop by mine (Homespun Devotions) sometime at: http://www.cherylsmithministries.blogspot.com. God bless you!
